In Plain English
- No specific city-wide material ban — Dallas doesn't have a blanket rule against any particular fence material – you can use wood, metal, vinyl, etc. But your homeowners’ association might have its own rules. Sec. 51A-10.131(g)
- Finished side must face adjoining property or street — Your fence’s nice, finished side must face your neighbor or the street – not the rough framework. So the posts and rails should be on your side. Sec. 51A-10.131(f)
- 4 feet — In your front yard, you cannot build a fence taller than 4 feet. This is measured from the ground level up. Sec. 51A-10.131
- 8 feet — In your backyard, you can put up a fence as high as 8 feet. Sec. 51A-10.131
- 8 feet — Along the sides of your house, you can build a fence up to 8 feet tall. Sec. 51A-10.131
- Latch must be at least 54 inches above grade or on the pool side of the gate — The latch on your pool fence gate must be either at least 54 inches off the ground (so kids can’t reach it) or placed on the inside (pool side) of the gate. Sec. 51A-10.131(h)
- At least 4 feet high, with self-closing and self-latching gate — If you have a pool, the fence around it must be at least 4 feet tall, and the gate must close and latch by itself. Sec. 51A-10.131(h)
- Fence must be entirely on owner's property, not on property line (typically set back a few inches) — Your fence must sit entirely on your own property, not right on the property line. Usually you’ll set it back a few inches from the line to stay legal. Sec. 51A-10.131(b)
- 25 feet by 25 feet — The sight triangle is a 25-foot by 25-foot area measured from the corner of your property where two streets meet. Sec. 51A-10.141
- Obstructions not exceeding 3 feet in height within the sight triangle — At intersections, you must keep the corner area (the sight triangle) clear of anything over 3 feet tall – this includes fences, bushes, or decorations – so drivers can see each other. Sec. 51A-10.141
- 4 feet — If your house is on a corner lot, the fence along the side that faces the street cannot be taller than 4 feet. Sec. 51A-10.131(d)
- Permit required for fences over 6 feet in height — If you plan to build a fence taller than 6 feet, you need to get a permit from the city first. Fences 6 feet or shorter generally don’t need one. Sec. 51A-10.131

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build an 8-foot-tall fence in my front yard?
No. In Dallas, the maximum fence height in a front yard is 4 feet for all zoning districts (Sec. 51A-10.131). An 8-foot fence is only allowed in side or rear yards, which have an 8-foot limit.
Do I need a permit to replace my existing 5-foot fence?
No permit is required because the fence is under 6 feet. The permit threshold in Dallas is for fences over 6 feet in height (Sec. 51A-10.131). If your new fence is also 5 feet, you’re fine without a permit.
I have a corner lot. How tall can my fence be on the side that faces the street?
On a corner lot, the street side yard fence cannot exceed 4 feet (Sec. 51A-10.131(d)). The side away from the street (your actual side yard) can be up to 8 feet, and the rear yard also 8 feet.
What are the rules for a fence around my swimming pool?
Pool fences must be at least 4 feet high with a self-closing and self-latching gate. The latch must be at least 54 inches above the ground or placed on the pool side of the gate (Sec. 51A-10.131(h)).
